If you are ordering sand for a site in the Klang Valley, the question is rarely "where do I get sand." It is "which sand," and the answer depends entirely on what the material has to do once it is in place. Concrete, plastering, backfilling and roadworks all want different things from the same broad material.
This guide covers the three grades we produce at Bestari Jaya — fine, coarse and dumping sand — and which jobs each one belongs on.
The short version
- Concrete and structural work — coarse sand. You want the larger, more angular grain.
- Plastering, rendering and wall finishes — fine sand. Surface quality is the whole point.
- Backfilling, levelling and general fill — dumping sand. Unwashed is fine here and cheaper.
- Roadworks and earthworks — usually dumping sand, sometimes coarse depending on the layer.
Sand for concrete
Concrete needs sand that lets cement paste grip it. That means a larger, more angular particle and a well-spread range of sizes — what a spec sheet calls good grading. Our coarse sand runs above 2 mm and up to 6 mm, which sits in the range normally wanted as the fine aggregate in a structural mix.
Two things matter more than most buyers expect. The first is silt and clay content: fine particles coat the sand grains and stop cement bonding to them, so a mix made with dirty sand loses strength even though nothing looks wrong. The second is consistency between loads — a batching plant that gets a different grading every delivery cannot hold a mix design.
For a batching plant or any structural pour, specify coarse sand and state the volume and delivery frequency up front — consistency across loads is easier to hold when the operator knows the schedule.
Sand for plastering and rendering
Plastering is the opposite problem. Here the grain has to be small and even, because every particle larger than the plaster coat is a defect you can see and feel. Coarse sand in a skim coat drags under the trowel and leaves scoring.
Fine sand runs up to 2 mm — small enough for wall finishes, mosaic bedding and the finer trades. It is also the grade where cleanliness shows up fastest: organic matter or excess clay in plastering sand causes staining and shrinkage cracking that only appears after the wall has dried.
A practical note — do not substitute fine sand into a concrete mix to use up stock. Too much fine material raises the water demand of the mix, and higher water means lower strength.
Sand for backfilling, levelling and fill
For backfilling behind retaining structures, levelling a platform, or raising ground before slab work, washed material is money spent on nothing. Dumping sand is unwashed and as-dug, which is exactly what the job needs: bulk material that compacts and drains.
The usual mistake here is over-specifying — ordering coarse or fine sand for fill because it sounds better. It performs no better as fill and costs more. Where the specification genuinely calls for a controlled fill material, that is a different requirement and worth confirming with your engineer before ordering.
Sand for roadworks and earthworks
Roadworks span several layers and the material changes as you go up through them. Sub-base and general formation work usually takes dumping sand or a hardcore blend; layers closer to the surface get progressively tighter specifications.
If your works are to a public-authority specification, the specification governs — not this guide. Send us the spec clause with your enquiry and we will tell you plainly whether the material from the concession meets it or not.
